How to make traveling abroad cheaper?2

Get a new rewards card
International travel is expensive. But these high costs offer a silver lining—they present a perfect opportunity to meet the high minimum spending requirements of new rewards cards, sports fitness   .

For example, if you spend $4,000 in three months, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card will offer 60,000 bonus points. Depending on your typical monthly budget, this can present a challenge.

But traveling internationally, you can spend thousands of dollars on airfare alone. You can cancel the entire minimum spend between the booked flight and the stay.

Plus, if you choose a travel rewards card, you may never have to pay for your airfare again.

Note that the best travel rewards credit cards also come with perks that will save you money directly. For example, some cards offer rental car insurance. Others have access to airport lounges, which often means free food, better Wi-Fi, and more comfortable (and scattered) seating.

Avoid foreign transaction fees
Some credit and bank cards charge foreign transaction fees when you use them abroad. There is a flat fee of 1% to 2% or a few dollars per transaction, which can add up quickly when you spend thousands overseas.

Double-check your current debit and credit cards for foreign transaction fees. If so, open a new credit card account without foreign transaction fees.

One card may be enough, although it's always helpful to have a spare when traveling abroad. Before you leave, research the best credit cards with no foreign transaction fees.

When abroad, keep these cards handy and other cards tucked deep into your wallet. Or better yet, lock them in the safe in your room. They can act as emergency backups in case something goes wrong with your wallet.
