It helps you know the local currency value when booking your trip. Due to fluctuating currency values, you may sometimes experience discounted travel due to the depreciation of your local currency against the U.S. dollar. sports fitness .

For example, my family and I spend most of the year in Brazil. When we moved here a few years ago, Brazilian reals (pronounced hey-al) traded at around 3.50 reals to $1. It now trades for around 5.50 reais to $1 — a huge difference in value.

These examples keep popping up. Another example is the Turkish lira depreciating in late 2021 and early 2022.

One way to get great deals on international travel is to keep an eye on troubled currencies. Do an occasional Google search for the best travel exchange rates at the time, and keep an open mind when planning your next trip.

Prepare foreign currency before leaving home
Visit your bank and withdraw foreign currency for your destination country. Avoid currency exchange offices at airports as they offer terrible exchange rates.

You want to have at least a little bit of local currency on arrival - if for no other reason than cash for a taxi to your hotel or vacation rental. But in some cases, you can get the best currency exchange deals by simply visiting an ATM when you arrive in the country.

But please check with your bank. Some banks charge foreign transaction fees, and most charge ATM fees for withdrawing cash outside of their network. Luckily, most of the big U.S. banks work with international banks to make free withdrawals from your bank account. Find a local bank that works with your bank and find the ATM closest to your hotel.

Some people also carry a few hundred dollars with them as an emergency backup when traveling abroad. If your bank froze your credit and debit cards and you ran out of local currency and couldn't withdraw more, you can always rely on your emergency reserves.

Even so, minimize cash purchases and stick to credit cards whenever possible.

Shopping with a credit card
Even though you can withdraw money from an ATM for free at market rates, cash comes with other inconveniences.

First, it's easy to lose or steal. Once gone, it's gone forever. However, if someone steals the credit card, you can reverse the fraudulent transaction.

It is also expensive to convert cash back into US dollars. You may be hit with two rounds of transaction fees.

This does not account for the potential travel or cash back rewards you can get by paying with plastic.

Just make sure you can pay off your credit card balance in full before interest starts to accrue.
