The dividing line between the two countries is in the middle of the mountains and lakes (Lagoon). Both towns are very small, just a few streets away. This small island has been divided between the two countries for more than 300 years. France and the Netherlands signed an agreement in 1648 to divide St. Maarten. French and Dutch armies assembled at the oyster pond on the east side of the island, then marched in opposite directions along the coastline to the point where they finally met to define the border between the two countries. Legend has it that during the ceremony before departure, the Dutch drank gin and light beer, and the French drank conger brandy and liquor. The French were so drunk, more excited than the Dutch, ran faster, and ended up taking up more space. There is also a legend that the Dutch were fascinated by a French girl, wasted a lot of time, and ended up taking up less space. Whatever the outcome, the peaceful and friendly relations between the two countries lasted for more than three hundred years. Anyone crossing the Dutch-French border on the island does not need any formalities, and there are no guards. This is unique in the world. A monument was erected on the border of the island in 1948 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the peaceful partition. There are four flags flying around the monument, namely the Dutch flag, the French flag, the Netherlands Antilles flag and the flag of the joint administration of Saint Martin. Both the French and Dutch areas on the island fly the flag of joint administration. The colors of the flag are the same as those of the Netherlands and France, which are red, white and blue, with red on the top and blue on the bottom, a white triangle on the left, and the emblem of St. Martin in the middle of the triangle. Above the badge is the sun and pelican, in the middle is the shape of the courthouse of Fort Philips, osmanthus, monument, and the lower ribbon reads "SEMPER PRO GREDIENS". The flag also symbolizes Dutch-French friendship.
