White sand, warm water and idyllic scenery: why Mexico is a popular beach destination. While sand and surf like Cancun and Acapulco are the best options, these 13 beaches stand out for their resorts, unique activities, and overall beauty. From popular vacation spots to hidden island gems, here are the best beaches in Mexico.
Jalisco, Costa Alegre
The Costa Alegre stretches across Mexico's Pacific coast into the states of Jalisco and Colima, with luxury hotels bordering wild landscapes. Just take a look at Cuixmala on the Costa Alegre, one of our readers' favorite western Mexico vacation spots in our annual Readers' Choice Awards survey. In addition to its oceanfront infinity pool, private beach, and extremely luxurious suites, the estate's backyard is home to 30,000 acres of wildlife. how about indulgence
Isla Holbox, Quintana Roo
A few years ago, we called Isla Holbox, north of Cancun, "one of Mexico's last secret beach towns." While it may no longer be a secret, its beaches, aqua blue waters and nature reserves are still dazzling. Spend the day shopping at the town's markets and textile stores, and don't forget to visit the island's famous overwater hammocks. New to the scene, Punta Caliza is one of our favorite places to stay.
Isla Espíritu Santo, Baja California Sur
Isla Espíritu Santo is located on the beautiful Sea of Cortez, a short boat ride from La Paz in the lower half of the Baja California peninsula. This uninhabited island is full of red rocks, pristine white sand beaches and lots of exotic wildlife. Swimming with the many sea lions is the highlight of many expeditions, followed by a relaxing picnic on the shoreline.
Playa Mazunte, Oaxaca
Surrounded by rocky headlands, Playa Mazunte is a peaceful sandy beach known for its bohemian vibes and rough waves (you'll find plenty of surfers here). But the beaches also attract people without surfboards: The coast is dotted with seafood shacks, perfect for a cold beer or two, and few can refuse a visit to the local turtle sanctuary, the Mexican Center.
Las Gatas, Zihuatanejo, Guerrero
The Pacific Coast surf town of Zihuatanejo (often referred to simply as "Zihua") has natural beauty that is both enticing and difficult to get to (hence the lack of crowds). We kept going back looking for cliffs and canyons backed by mangroves, dug bays and Sierra Madre del Sur mountains. There are four beaches in Violet which can be reached from the city centre, the best, and also the most remote, is Playa Las Gatas. White sandy beaches and turquoise lagoons are perfect for hanging out with a beer, snorkeling, and spotting humpback whales on the horizon.
Tulum, Quintana Roo
About an hour south of Cancun, Tulum has become one of Mexico's most beloved beach destinations, and perhaps a favorite among Instagram influencers. Not surprisingly, considering the white sand beaches, warm turquoise water and tree-lined roads. Add to that a seriously innovative dining scene and some great new design hotels (like hotlist-winning Casa Pueblo and its waterfront sister Casa Pueblo Boca Paila), and you're definitely on your way for your next vacation.
Playa del Amor, Marietta Islands, Nayarit
It looks like something out of a fantasy movie, but Playa del Amor (often called "Hidden Beach") is a very real attraction, albeit hard to reach. Just west of Puerto Vallarta, the beach is engulfed by a cave with a large hole in the roof that is said to be the result of a military test bomb by the Mexican government in the early 1900s. In addition to the undulating cave, the hole now serves as a unique skylight, allowing for sunbathing and photo opportunities on the beach, but the extremely strong currents here make swimming an adventurous endeavor.
Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur
Cabo San Lucas is known as a popular tourist destination - hello Spring Break! - but that's not necessarily a bad thing. This resort city happens to have some of the best beaches in Mexico, including the remote Playas La Palmas (4x4 rental) Arrival Beach and the real surfers paradise Playa Acapulquito. Then there are the resorts. You've got plenty of options here, but you won't get any better than Chileno Bay Resort on our 2019 Hot List. Aside from the beautiful and breezy villa, its location on one of Cabo's best beaches for swimming is unbeatable.
Playa Norte Beach, Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo
While often considered a side trip to the city of Cancun, Isla Islam is a destination in its own right. Playa Norte's main beach is made of crushed coral, has warm shallow waters, and is much quieter than the beaches on the other side of the bay. Diving enthusiasts should take note: the island is home to the largest number of whale sharks on the planet.
Trocones, Guerrero
Formerly a quiet fishing village 46 miles north of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport, Troncones has become a haven for adventurous travelers. The three-mile-long beach attracts surfers from all over the world, while ecotourists enjoy horseback riding on the sand and hiking in the nearby Sierra Madre Mountains. On top of that, Troncones' population has hovered around 500-600 permanent residents, always maintaining an excellent sense of isolation.
Yelapa, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco
Yelapa is a 30-minute boat ride from Puerto Vallarta. That's the appeal of this far-away paradise, with long beaches and few tourists. Walk straight from the boat to the crescent-shaped sand, grab some fish tacos and beer at the thatched-roofed Angelina's Gardens Beach Club, and spend the rest of the day lounging under the palm trees One of the many hammocks.
Playa La Boquilla, Puerto Ingles, Oaxaca
The town of Puertongel sits on a picturesque horseshoe-shaped bay, sheltered by craggy rocks and surrounded by wooded hills. Although the town is mostly a small fishing port, the waters here are calm and bright blue. The best beach views can be found at Playa La Boquilla, about three miles east of the bay, where shallow waters allow you to snorkel.
Playa Los Cerritos, Todos Santos, Baja California
The five-mile-long Playa Los Cerritos beach is one of the safest swimming spots near trendy Todos Santos, an hour north of Cabo in the Pacific Ocean. It's a popular spot for surfing (with easy lessons), shell collecting and family outings. It's also one of the most developed beaches in the region: in addition to its on-site bar and restaurant, Liz Lambert's hippie-style boutique hotel, Hotel San Cristóbal is also a short drive from Playa Punta Lobos .
