Mallorca is known as the "Party Island" for its vibrant nightlife. This place has the largest nightclub in Europe, BCM Mallorca. The bar at Magaluf, a large resort in Calvia, in the southwest of the island, invites world-famous DJs to play music such as David Guetta or Calvin Harris, sports fitness  .

However, Magruf has been criticised for selling alcohol and fast food at bargain prices by focusing on the "drink all the way" culture of British tourists. Groups of Brits took turns going to the bars, each drinking a few drinks until they were drunk. This has resulted in an emergency centre with British staff located near the bar area.

Calvia tourism director Xavier Pascuet admits: “Magaluf is where one Briton after another drinks and revels in BCM nightclubs.”

Another major drinking spot on Mallorca is Playa de Palma, a beach resort east of Palma. The place is nicknamed Ballermann, after the German slang for "drink a lot of wine".

In 2018, the island recorded 15 cases of drunk tourists, most of them British, falling from balconies. Eight of the 15 people were killed.

"Locals have complained for years that measures must be taken to address the gathering and fights of drunk tourists in the streets. Every time the locals wake up, they see vomit, rubbish and broken glass," said Balearic spokeswoman Yaa Alexandra Wilms Tourism said in 2019.

Calvia is also known for being the site of numerous allegations of sexual assault. In 2018, the Esquerra Unida party ranked Calvia as the city with the most sexual assaults and rapes in Spain, with 3.46 rapes per 10,000 inhabitants. The population of this area is less than 50,000 people.

In August 2017, a 19-year-old Scottish girl told police she was raped by three men on a beach in Magaluf, the British newspaper The Sun reported. In September 2017, a 21-year-old British woman reported to police that she had been raped.

In June 2018, a 31-year-old Romanian man was arrested on suspicion of raping a 22-year-old British tourist at a resort. In July 2018, a 19-year-old Irish man was arrested after a 33-year-old British tourist said she was raped in Magaluf.

For the past few years, Mallorca politicians, hoteliers and restaurateurs have been working hard to promote Mallorca as a high-quality tourist destination, not just for the "endless" cheap reception. There are now more than 400 four- and five-star hotels on the island, double the number 10 years ago.

The city of Palma passed a regulation to prevent intoxication in public places, and the government of the Balearic Islands imposed restrictions on alcohol sales in supermarkets. But these measures were not very successful. Juan Miguel Ferrer, president of the Palma Beach Business Group, said: "The police must monitor the compliance of tourists and issue fines immediately for violations."

Palma allows on-the-spot fines of up to $788, but few tourists carry such a large amount of cash, a police spokesman said. Therefore, the police in Playa de Palma mainly monitor the activities of party participants from a distance, intervening only in the most serious cases.

Ferrer said the situation improved after two years of the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to fewer tourists to Mallorca, but not for long. "After some progress, there is now a setback," Ferrer said, pointing to the beach where dozens of groups of young people were drinking beer. The smell of vomit, urine and sunscreen filled the air. "In the past few weeks, Palma Beach has returned to its pre-pandemic era," Ferrer said last week.
