Palau



The Republic of Palau, also known as Palau, is located in the western Pacific Ocean, more than 700 miles south of Guam. It is part of the Caroline Islands and is one of the gateway from the Pacific to Southeast Asia. The coastline is 1519 kilometers long. It was occupied by Spain in 1885. In 1898, it was sold to Germany by Spain. It was occupied by Japan during World War I. During World War II, it was captured by the United States. In 1947, the United Nations entrusted it to the United States for custody. In August 1982, Palau signed the Treaty of Free Association with the United States. Palau ended its trusteeship status on October 1, 1994 and became an independent sovereign state, but still maintained special relations with the United States. In December of the same year, Palau joined the United Nations.
