St. John's Island

St. John's Island

Singapore Island

Saint John's Island is located at latitude 1 ° 13 ′ 11 ″ north and longitude 103 ° 50 ′ 52 ″ east. It was originally known as Sakijang Bendera and is approximately 6.5 kilometers south of Singapore's main island, covering an area of approximately 40.5 hectares,  sports fitness  .

geographical position

St. John's Island was a quarantine checkpoint for Asian immigrants in the early days of Singapore's opening, and became a concentration camp and drug rehabilitation center for political prisoners in Singapore in the mid-20th century. The quarantine stations and drug rehabilitation centers on the island were closed in the 1970s, but facilities for illegal immigration detention centers still exist here. In the 21st century, St. John's Island is a vacation and leisure island in Singapore, as well as the location of the Tropical Marine Science Research Institute, the Agriculture, Food and Veterinary Bureau (the Marine Aquaculture Center of Ewell Singapore).

Current situation

In 1975, the government decided to develop it into a tourist area. There are no car roads on the island, and sheep intestines are scattered throughout the island. There are public telephone booths outside the dock. In addition to the above public facilities, the island also has three public bathrooms, a football field, and two basketball courts. On the north side of the island, there is an artificial lake (Swimming Lagoon) for tourists to play, swim, and sunbathe. There are also four "barracks" located in the western part of St. John's Island, with a total of 15 houses for campers to use. In addition, the Singapore Agriculture, Food and Veterinary Bureau has established the Marine Aquaculture Centre in the southern part of St. John's Island, which is a $33 million mariculture center that mainly studies the technology of large-scale hatching of fish eggs and raising fish fry. In recent years, tourists have taken photos of dolphins appearing in the waters off St. John's Island. Dolphins are very cute animals, and I never expected to see them on St. John's Island. Singaporeans must take good care of the island's environment.

Island ecology

Sea Emperor Dove: It is found in coastal areas and mangroves, as well as on Diao Meng Island in Malaysia.

Black winged Starling: Introduced from Indonesia to "St. John's Island" and found in open areas with lower terrain.

plant

Nepenthes: A rare carnivorous plant that uses leaves similar to pig cages to trap insects. It can be found on the coast of the island and in the jungle.

Firefly Mangrove: An endangered mangrove forest, with only a few found in Singapore on St. John's Island, Tekong Island, and Umin Island.

bus line

St. John's Island has regular ferries between Marina South Pier, St. John's Island, and Turtle Island. Take bus 400 or 402 at the Marina Bay subway station (if unsure of the location, you can ask the driver, but don't ask while the bus is moving, they will also guide you in detail) to Marina Bay Pier. The journey from Marina South Pier to St. John's Island is about 30 to 45 minutes, with an adult fare of S $15 and a children's fare of S $12. Because St. John's Island and Turtle Island are not far apart and the route is connected, it is recommended to arrange a one day trip to the two islands.
