The Tokelauan Islands are also known as the "Yuning Islands" or the "United Islands". The island group in the central and southern Pacific Ocean consists of three coral islands: Fakaofo Atafu (2.63 square kilometers), Atafu (2.03 square kilometers), and Nukunonu (5.46 square kilometers). Tokelau is located between 8 ° -10 ° S and 171 ° -173 ° W, 480 kilometers north of Western Samoa and 3900 kilometers southwest of Hawaii, with Tuvalu to the west and Kiribati to the east and north, sports fitness   .

The three coral atolls in Tokelau line up from southeast to northwest, surrounded by many small islands and reefs, forming a central lagoon. The largest atoll, Nukunonu, is located 480 kilometers south of Samoa. The atoll island is located on a reef vein that drops sharply into the sea not far from the shore. The atoll lagoon is shallow in water, with coral outcrops interspersed between it, making it unsuitable for navigation. The island has a low and flat terrain, with an altitude of 2.4-4.5 meters (8-15 feet). The high permeability of its coral sandy soil forces people to adopt two water storage measures, traditionally using coconut tree trunks in hollowed out centers for water storage.

It belongs to a tropical marine climate with an average annual temperature of 28 ℃. July is the coolest and May is the hottest, but during the rainy season, it is relatively cool with occasional storms.

The annual average rainfall ranges from 1500 to 2500, mostly concentrated during the trade wind season (April to November) with occasional typhoons and occasional droughts in other months.

The vegetation is very dense, with about 40 types of trees, including coconut trees, dew trees, and other Polynesian trees and shrubs. Wild animals include rats, lizards, seabirds, and some migratory birds.

In 1889, it became a British protectorate, and in 1948, sovereignty over the archipelago was transferred to New Zealand and incorporated into its territory. In 1994, it implemented autonomy and became a self-governing territory of New Zealand. The two independence referendums in 2006 and 2007 both ended in failure.
