The Tokelauan Islands are also known as the "Yuning Islands" or the "United Islands". The vegetation is very dense, with about 40 types of trees, including coconut trees, dew trees, and other Polynesian trees and shrubs. Wild animals include rats, lizards, seabirds, and some migratory birds.
In 1889, it became a British protectorate, and in 1948, sovereignty over the archipelago was transferred to New Zealand and incorporated into its territory. In 1994, it implemented autonomy and became a self-governing territory of New Zealand. The two independence referendums in 2006 and 2007 both ended in failure.
