The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (hereinafter referred to as Sri Lanka), with its capital, Colombo, is an island country located in the Indian Ocean south of the South Asian subcontinent, facing India across the Baoke Strait in the northwest. It has a tropical monsoon climate, close to the equator, and is as summer all year round, without any distinction between the four seasons. 2500 years ago, Aryans from northern India immigrated to Ceylon to establish the Sinhalese dynasty. In 247 BC, Asoka of the Peacock Dynasty in India sent his son to the island to promote Buddhism. Since then, the Sinhalese have abandoned Brahmanism and converted to Buddhism. Around the 2nd century BC, the Tamils of South India also began to migrate and settle on Ceylon Island. From the 5th century to the 16th century, there were constant battles between the Sinhala Kingdom and the Tamil Kingdom on the island. Since the 16th century, it has been ruled by the Portuguese and Dutch. It became a British colony at the end of the 18th century. In February 1948, it gained independence and was named Ceylon. On May 22, 1972, it was renamed the Republic of Sri Lanka. On August 16, 1978, the country was renamed the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is a founding member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation and a member of the Commonwealth, the G77, the Non Aligned Movement, and the United Nations. Its capital, Colombo, is known as the "crossroads of the east". Mainly based on the plantation economy, with a weak industrial foundation, and mainly focused on agricultural products and clothing processing industry. In 2020, Sri Lanka's GDP was US $80.7 billion.
