Burundi

The Republic of Burundi, referred to as Burundi for short, is located in the south of the equator in the middle east of Africa. It borders Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, Congo to the west, and Lake Tanganyika to the southwest. There are many plateaus and mountains in the territory, most of which are composed of plateaus on the east side of the Great Rift Valley. With an average altitude of 1600 meters, the country is known as the "Mountain Country", with a land area of 27834 square kilometers. The country is divided into one municipality directly under the Central Government and 17 provinces. Gitega is the political capital, Bujumbura is the economic capital, with a population of 12.6 million (2022). It is composed of three ethnic groups: Hutu (84%), Tutsi (15%), and Teva (1%).

Burundi established a feudal kingdom before the 17th century. It became part of German East Africa in 1890. In 1922, it became the appointed territory of Belgium. In 1946, the United Nations entrusted Burundi to Belgium for "trusteeship". On July 1, 1962, independence was declared and the Kingdom of Burundi was established. On November 28, 1966, Michel Micombero launched a coup to establish the Republic of Burundi. On November 1, 1976, Jean-Baptiste Bagaza launched a coup to establish the Second Republic of Burundi. On September 3, 1987, Pierre Buyoya took office as president in a coup and established the Third Republic. In 1992, the Multi-party system was implemented.

Burundi is one of the least developed countries in the world. It is an agricultural and animal husbandry country. Its difficulties in economic development lie in its small country, large population, poor resources and no access to the sea.
