In 703, Tunisia was conquered by Arab Muslims. In the 13th century, the Hafsid dynasty established a powerful Tunisian state. In 1574, it became a province of the Ottoman Empire of Türkiye. In 1881, it became a French protected territory. On March 20, 1956, France recognized Tunisia's independence. On July 25, 1957, the Tunisian Constituent Assembly passed a resolution to depose the king and declared the establishment of the Tunisian Republic, with Burguiba as the first president.
