Handan City is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province, a Type II large city, and a central city in the southern region of Hebei Province approved by the State Council. Handan is located at the southern end of Hebei Province, bordering on the Taihang Mountains in the west, North China Plain in the east, and Shanxi, Shandong, and Henan provinces. Handan City is a national historical and cultural city with a history of 3100 years of construction. In 1956, Fengfeng City at the prefecture level was merged into Handan City.
In 1983, Handan County was merged into Handan City.
In 1984, it became a provincial-level city.
In 1986, Wu'an County (later renamed as a city) was transferred to Handan City.
In 1993, with the approval of the State Council, the Handan area was abolished and merged into cities. The counties under the jurisdiction of the Handan area were placed under the jurisdiction of Handan City, known as Handan City.
In 2016, the State Council approved the adjustment of some administrative divisions in Handan City, Hebei Province. Firstly, it agreed to abolish Feixiang County and establish Feixiang District, with the original administrative area of Feixiang County as the administrative area of Feixiang District. The People's Government of Feixiang District is located at No. 1 Guang'an East Road, Feixiang Township. 2、 Agree to abolish Yongnian County and establish Yongnian District, with the administrative area of the original Yongnian County (excluding Nanyan Village, Xiaoxibao Township, and Yaozhai Township) as the administrative area of Yongnian District. The People's Government of Yongnian District is located at No. 25 Mingzhou Avenue, Linmingguan Town. 3、 Agree to revoke Handan County and transfer the original Hesha Town, Nanbao Township, and Daizhao Township of Handan County to the jurisdiction of Hanshan District, and transfer the original Shangbi Town, Nanlugu Township, Jianzhuang Township, and Sanling Township of Handan County to the jurisdiction of Congtai District. 4、 Agree to transfer Gaoyu Town, Guanglu Town, Xinzhuangying Township, Huaguanying Township, and Taicheng Township of Cixian County to the jurisdiction of Hanshan District, transfer Lintan Town and Nancheng Township of Cixian County to the jurisdiction of Fuxing District, and transfer Nanyan Village, Xiaoxibao Township, and Yaozhai Township of the original Yongnian County to the jurisdiction of Congtai District
On January 5, 2022, with the approval of the People's Government of Hebei Province, Feixiang District abolished Yuangu Township and established Yuangu Town, and abolished Jiudian Township and established Beigao Town; Linzhang County has abolished Zhangcunji Township and established Zhangcunji Town, abolished Zhuanzhaiying Township and established Zhuanzhaiying Town, and abolished Xiwen Township and established Xiwen Town; Daming County has abolished Beifeng Township and established Beifeng Town, and abolished Huangjindi Township and established Huangjindi Town.
