Backpacking in the High Mountains

This six-day trip begins in Bishop, California and ends on the Mosquito Plains Trail. It covers three high passes of 11,000 or more in the John Muir Wilderness area. While the tour includes meals, participants are responsible for their own camping and climbing equipment such as tents, sleeping bags and mats, cutlery and backpacks, sports fitness   .

A good backpack can make your trip more comfortable. As the most important part of self-service travel, the design and capacity of the backpack are directly related to the success of the trip. Different capacity backpacks may be determined according to the length of the journey and actual needs, generally ranging from 30 liters to 70 liters. Xiaobian's backpack is 70 liters large. Professional backpacks will have two aluminum tube support structures to distribute the force evenly to each force point. Generally, there will be many external hangers on the outside of the backpack, such as water bottles, triangles, etc. racks and many other things.

1. How to choose the carrying system of the backpack

When buying a bag, you can't just look at the capacity and size, but also what kind of suspension system you should use.

Before choosing a bag, you'd better ask your family and friends to measure your torso length with a ruler (preferably a tailor's tape measure). This torso length is the distance from your seventh vertebra (the one that sticks out most where your neck meets your shoulders) to the vertebra that is parallel to your crotch. The length of the torso is in line with the needs of your inner frame. Don't think that if you are 1.8 meters tall, you should carry a large bag. Some people have long legs and short legs, and some people have short legs and long legs.

In general, if your torso length is less than 45 cm, you should buy a small bag. If your torso length is between 45-52 cm, you should choose a medium bag. If your torso is over 52cm long, you should pick a large bag.

Good manufacturers offer extra-large (over 56 cm) or extra-small (under 40 cm) bags, and they can also be tailored. The sizes of the bags of the major manufacturers are different, and even the sizes of the bags of different series of the same manufacturer are different. You'd better ask clearly, or find some data, if you really can't, just measure the length of the inner shelf.

Second, the correct use of the backpack

The correct way to install a backpack is to balance the things on both sides, and put the heavier things on the top. Generally, the backpack is divided into upper and lower layers, and the lower layer can put sleeping bags, shoes, etc.

1. Backpack

Loosen the shoulder straps, put the bag in a higher position or let others hold it, and then tighten the waistband and shoulder straps after carrying the bag. The waistband of the backpack is tightened to distribute most of the weight of the bag to the waist and hips. So that the shoulders are not tired; tighten the shoulder straps to make the backpack closer to the back, so as to control the balance while walking. There is a backpack number on each backpack during team training, please remember your bag number to avoid getting it wrong.

2. Packing

Put tents, sleeping bags, and moisture-proof pads into the backpack vertically, stuff your own clothes into the gaps of these things, and put food and other sundries on them. Put commonly used things in the side pockets of the backpack, such as toilet paper. , flashlight, water bottle, etc. Note: heavy things should be placed on the upper part of the backpack, and do not put sleeping bags and moisture-proof pads on the ground when packing, so as not to get dirty or let insects crawl in.

3. How to choose a backpack?

Backpacks over 45 liters will have at least five adjustable elastic straps with different functions:

Belt: The thick belt is an important part of the weight distribution of the backpack, and it is also the most obvious difference between a professional backpack and an ordinary travel backpack. The waist belt can be adjusted according to individual needs, adjust to carry comfort.

The size of each manufacturer is different. Generally speaking, the size of the belt is as follows:

If your waist is over 106cm, choose extra large.

If your waist is 92-106 cm, go for the large size.

Check the size if your waist is 78-92 cm.

If your waist is 68-78cm, choose small.

If your waist circumference (around the hip bone) is under 68cm, choose extra small.

In addition, due to the different body shapes of men and women, good manufacturers have specially designed some styles of backpacks for girls. The carrying system of these bags is specially made according to the physical characteristics of women. Such as: the granite halo tracking enhanced version of the men's and women's shoulder travel mountaineering hiking bag is very popular with outdoor girls.

Shoulder Straps: A well-designed backpack with thick and ventilating shoulder straps will not feel uncomfortable when the general load does not exceed 1/3 of the body weight. Once adjusted, there won't be much space between the bag and your shoulder blades (except for people with hunched backs). A good bag can adjust the weight distribution on the shoulders at will, and you can adjust it at any time according to physical strength and environment.

Chest strap: It is used to adjust the distance between the two shoulder straps. When using it, it should be adjusted so that the backpack can be close to the body without being oppressive. The chest strap is noticeable in reducing the weight-bearing effect of the shoulders.

Backpack compression strap: The main function is to adjust the backpack capacity, external equipment and keep the center of gravity from moving.

The center of gravity adjustment belt: the connecting belt between the upper part of the strap and the backpack is the center of gravity adjustment belt. It usually maintains a 45-degree angle. Tighten it to move the center of gravity to the shoulders, loosen it to move the center of gravity to the buttocks, and pass between the shoulders and hips. adjustment to reduce fatigue. On flat roads, you can adjust the center of gravity a little higher, and on the downhill, lower the center of gravity.

4. How to adjust the outdoor backpack?

1. Before buying a backpack, you should loosen all the adjustment straps and add the weight, because if there is no weight, it is impossible to know the feeling of the backpack and whether the adjustment range is suitable.

2. After wearing the backpack, check whether the arc of the built-in aluminum bar matches the curve of the back. If not, check whether the aluminum bar can be bent; if it can be bent, the aluminum bar will naturally bend into a curve that matches the back after a period of use. Is the pack and back contact part comfortable and breathable?

3. The connection between the shoulder strap and the backpack must be 5-8 cm below the shoulder, and the gap between the shoulder strap and the backpack should be small. The chest strap can adjust the width of the shoulder strap opening and closing on the chest, so that the shoulder strap can be in a more comfortable position on the shoulder, and can prevent the backpack from shaking.

4. After adjusting the backpack to the most suitable position, should check the line of sight of the head? Is it possible to look up without hitting the top of the pack? Can I still look up to the sky when wearing the helmet?

5. The adjustment range of the shoulder straps must be in line with the length of the back, so that the center of gravity can fall in the ideal position; the hip straps must be able to tie on the crotch. When carrying the backpack, you should be able to see the buttocks and legs from the back. Women with smaller stature should pay special attention to this. Do not only see the backpack and calves from the back when carrying the backpack. This is very wrong and dangerous.

In short, a good carrying system is properly adjusted, and can transfer most of the weight (more than 60%) to the crotch and hips, so that different muscle parts can share the weight, so that your shoulders will be much easier and more flexible. . Then you may have enough energy to enjoy nature.
