In 1959, it achieved autonomy and became an autonomous state. In September 1963, the Malaysian Federation was jointly formed with Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak. On August 9, 1965, it seceded from Malaysia and established the Republic of Singapore; He became a member of the United Nations in September of the same year and joined the Commonwealth in October of the same year.
