The Vatican City State, abbreviated as the Vatican City, is the capital city of the Vatican City. Located on the highlands at the northwest corner of Rome, Italy, the Vatican City is the smallest country in the world with a land area of 0.44 square kilometers. In 756, Pope Stephen II received a gift from King Pippin of France to the city and surrounding areas of Rome, with religious and secular authority. Thereafter, a papal state was established in central Italy. It was annexed by the Kingdom of Italy in 1870. In February 1929, Mussolini signed the Lateran Treaty with Pope Pius XI. The Pope officially recognized the demise of the papal state and established another Vatican city state. Italy recognized the Vatican as a sovereign state, with sovereignty belonging to the Pope.
The Vatican has its own public service institutions such as banks, post offices, and telecommunications, but its natural resources are scarce and there is no industrial and agricultural production. Its financial revenue mainly depends on tourism, the issuance of stamps and coins, real estate leasing, religious bank
